Before You Brief: The One Decision That Determines Everything
Before you open the platform, you need one sentence.
Not a topic. Not a theme. Not a content pillar. A single, testable strategic question, the specific claim your survey will either confirm or challenge. Everything that follows depends on this sentence being right. Get it wrong here, and the data you receive will be accurate and useless.
A well-scoped strategic question has three properties. It is specific enough to have a right answer and a wrong answer. The brand has a hypothesis about which is true. And the answer is expressible as a single data point, ideally a percentage, that can stand alone as a headline claim.
Here is what that distinction looks like in practice.
Not a strategic question: "What do US consumers think about sustainability in grocery?"
A strategic question: "Do US grocery shoppers trust on-pack sustainability claims made by private label brands?"
The first is a topic. It could generate a hundred findings, none of which point anywhere specific. The second is testable. The brand has a view, they suspect trust is lower than the category assumes, and the survey will either validate or challenge that view. The finding will be a number. The number will make a claim.
Before you open Standard Insights, write this sentence. Then write the one-page brief around it: one research question, three to five hypotheses about what you expect to find, and a named audience segment. The brief is one page. If it is longer, the question is not scoped tightly enough.
If you cannot write the strategic question in one sentence, you are not ready to commission the survey.
How to Build Your Survey in Standard Insights
The Standard Insights platform does not ask you to build a survey from scratch. It asks you to describe what you want to know.
The entry point is a topic prompt, one sentence describing the strategic topic you want to investigate. Type it the way you wrote it in your brief. The platform generates a full question set from that prompt, typically in under a minute. In most cases, the first draft is 80% of the way there: the core question is framed correctly, the supporting questions build context, and the answer choices are appropriately constructed.
Refinement happens through the AI chat. This is where the 20% gets fixed. Use it to make questions more specific to your audience, to add a question that addresses a hypothesis your brief includes but the first draft missed, and to remove anything generic that does not contribute to answering the strategic question. Each iteration takes seconds. The standard for a first survey-backed content asset is simple: every question on the final list either answers the strategic question or explains why respondents answered as they did. If a question does neither, cut it.
Two defaults worth applying on a first commission. Keep the question set to 10 to 15 questions, long enough to produce secondary findings that give the report depth, short enough that completion rates stay high and the price low. And keep the question format simple: multiple choice and scale questions for the headline finding, open-ended only if you specifically need direct consumer quotes in the published asset.
The survey build takes minutes. The brief takes longer. That is the right order.
Setting Your Audience and Launching
Two decisions before the survey goes to field: who receives it, and what add-ons to include.
On audience: for most B2C content use cases, the starting point is 500 nationally representative US adults, or 500 adults in a named category, primary grocery shoppers, skincare buyers, financial product holders. The reason 500 nationally representative is the standard is not arbitrary. It is large enough to produce findings that hold at the category level. It is specific enough to be credible in a published content claim. And, critically, it is large enough to cut the data later by age, gender, income, and region without the sub-groups becoming too small to be meaningful. If you know at the brief stage that you will want segment-level findings, 500 nationally representative is the minimum starting point, not a shortcut.

What You Receive and How to Read It
The report arrives fully built. No assembly required. Here is what is inside.
Quick bites. A summary of the key findings, the headline numbers pulled out and readable at a glance. This is where most readers start and where most non-researchers will spend the majority of their time. If the finding is strong, it is visible here before anyone opens a single chart.
Introduction. A video introduction and the full context of the study, methodology, sample, and the strategic question the survey was designed to answer. This is the section that establishes credibility for anyone who reads the report before trusting its conclusions. It is also the section that makes the report citable: named methodology, named sample, named question.
Market trends. Macro and secondary data contextualising the findings against the broader category. This is the layer that situates your proprietary finding in the market: what was already known, and why your data adds something the category did not have before.
Analysis. The in-depth section. Every finding from the survey examined, interpreted, and connected back to the strategic question. This is where the data becomes a point of view, the section the brand's strategy team will work from when building the brief, the campaign, or the board deck.
Personas. Up to 5 personas identified directly from the dataset, each built from filtered survey responses rather than demographic assumption. Each persona reflects a real segment of the sample: what they said, how they differ from the broader group, and what the data reveals about their decision-making. This is the section that turns a survey into a segmentation tool without commissioning additional research.
Survey. Full data visualisation of every question, organised in sections and fully explorable. Custom views, filters, splits, and comparisons are all available here. This is the raw analytical layer, where a researcher or an agency strategist goes to cut the data their own way, test a hypothesis the original brief did not include, or pull a specific finding for a client presentation.
Before the report goes anywhere, four decisions.

Set the lead gate. The built-in lead form sits in front of the report. Customise the fields: name, email, company, job title are the defaults. The form is mobile responsive. Three to five specific claims the brand expects the data to confirm or challenge. These become the supporting questions in the survey.
Example:
- Trust in private label sustainability claims is lower than trust in branded equivalents
- Shoppers who read ingredient labels are more sceptical of generic "clean" or "sustainable" designations
- A clear, specific claim, e.g. "made with 30% recycled packaging", is trusted more than an unqualified "eco-friendly" label
