Cambodia is a Southeast Asian country located in the southwestern region of the Indochinese Peninsula. It is bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east and southeast, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. The country has an area of 181,035 km² and is divided into 25 provinces, which are further divided into districts and communes.

In 2024, Cambodia’s economy showed resilience with a growth rate supported by the services sector, along with manufacturing and agriculture, continuing to drive economic expansion. Key opportunities include the digital economy and regional cooperation, while the government focuses on economic diversification and industrial upgrading.
On the positive side, ongoing infrastructure development and trade agreements are enhancing Cambodia’s attractiveness for foreign investment, particularly in sectors like manufacturing and tourism. Cambodia, as an ASEAN member since 1999 and a WTO member since 2004, boasts a highly open economy. Its key exports comprise gold, clothing, footwear, timber, and rubber, with clothing and petroleum oils being the primary imports. The United States, Japan, Singapore, and Japan are Cambodia’s major trading partners, while China, Thailand, and Vietnam account for a significant portion of its total imports.
Cambodia has become a popular tourist destination, offering iconic attractions like Angkor Wat, the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh, and serene beaches in Sihanoukville. In 2019, the country welcomed 6.61 million international tourists, highlighting its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Despite challenges from the global pandemic, Cambodia saw positive growth with 2.2 million international visitors in 2022, an 11% increase from the previous year. With ambitious goals, Cambodia aims to attract 4 million international tourists in 2023, showcasing its commitment to tourism development.
Cambodia has seen significant growth in internet usage, with 13.44 million internet users in January 2022 and an internet penetration rate of 78.8% of the total population. The number of internet users increased by 177 thousand (+1.3%) between 2021 and 2022, reflecting the country’s increasing connectivity and digital adoption. Cambodia’s investment in digital infrastructure is expected to drive further internet usage and penetration in the future.
As of 2022, Cambodia has roughly 12.3 million active social media users, representing around 73.9% of the eligible population. This number has seen a 5% increase from 2021 to 2022.
Over the past decade, Cambodia has witnessed a significant shift in its social media landscape, transitioning from Facebook being the sole accessible platform due to government restrictions to now having access to most international social media platforms within the country.
