Cannabis Study
in Thailand

The study aims to understand the perspective of the local Thai population concerning the recent policy change regarding the legalization of the consumption and sale of cannabis in Thailand.

Main Takeaways

On June 9, 2022, Thailand officially became the first country in the Southeast Asian region to legalize the consumption and sale of cannabis nationwide. This places Thailand as only the third country in the world to enact nationwide legalization, following Canada and Uruguay. This policy change represents a polarizing and drastic shift from the Thai government’s previously stringent stance on cannabis.

In the context of this legalization, Standard Insights conducted a survey with over 250 Thai individuals one month later to gauge local perspectives on this policy change.

POLICY AWARENESS

Most respondents (97.65%) in all age and gender groups are aware of the cannabis legalization policy in the country.

GENERAL PERCEPTION

More than half (51.96%) of the surveyed Thais showed a positive perception of the news on the legalization of Cannabis in the country.
support

CANNABIS SUPPORT

58.98% support cannabis legalization for specific purposes, with medical reasons being the most prominent justification.
impact

POLICY IMPACTS

While the news has received generally favorable reactions, more Thais (52.34%) are skeptical of its long-term effects.

AFFECTED SECTORS

Following the current legislation, Thais regard health (40.23%) and medicine (30.08%) to be the most impacted sectors.

PRIMARY BENEFITS

Cannabis' calming effects are preferred by nearly half of Thais (49.61%). 28.52% also enjoy how it makes them sleep better.

MAIN RISKS & DANGER

62.89% of respondents are showing concerns about the possible risk of addiction to cannabis-contained products.
availability

COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY

Roughly 7 out of 10 (67.19%) Thai participants are unaware that cannabis-contained products are commercially available.
advertising

CANNABIS ADVERTISING

51.17% of survey-takers support and have no qualms about the advertising of cannabis. Only a third of them disagree.
buying

BUYING CHANNEL

The most preferred method of buying cannabis is through a mix of online and offline channels, according to 44.14% of respondents.
intention

INTENTIONS & USE

More than half or 55.79% of the surveyed respondents anticipate that their consumption of cannabis will increase.
option

CANNABIS OPTIONS

40% of those who have already used cannabis consume it for medical purposes or as food, while 20% use it recreationally.
